CASES WE SEE OFTEN
SCAR TYPES WE COMMONLY ASSESS
Scar camouflage tattooing covers a wider range of restorative and corrective work than most clients realize.
Some cases are more complex than others, especially when scar texture, colour variation, previous treatment history, or emotional sensitivity are part of the picture.
In those cases, assessment and planning matter even more.
if we believe your scar is better suited to a different plan, or that the result you want is unlikely, we will tell you honestly.
- i. Surgical scars - C-section, breast reduction, tummy tuck, mastectomy reconstruction after surgical clearance.
- ii. Accident or injury scars that have lightened over time and become flat or near-flat.
- iii. Stretch marks in the white, mature stage, not red or purple.
- iv. Self-harm scars that are fully healed and emotionally settled enough to revisit the area thoughtfully.
- v. Hypopigmented scars across all Fitzpatrick skin types, fair to deeply melanated.
THE HAND DOING THE WORK
ALYSSA – PARAMEDICAL TATTOO ARTIST, GRIMSBY.
With over a decade in cosmetic and paramedical tattooing, Alyssa has built her practice around restraint. Most of her scar camouflage work is corrective by nature, careful pigment matching, layered passes, and honest conversations about what is and isn't possible.
"A good scar camouflage result is one you stop noticing. That's the whole point. The skill is in the patience, and in being honest when it's not the right time."
WHAT'S REALISTIC
WHAT SCAR CAMOUFLAGE ACTUALLY DOES
Three honest descriptions of the result. We avoid promising transformation language because it sets up the wrong expectation.
REDUCES CONTRAST
The scar still exists physically, texture and depth don't change. But the colour difference between scar and skin is softened, often dramatically, so the eye stops landing on it.
BUILDS IN LAYERS
Pigment is applied in gradual layers across multiple sessions to build a natural-looking result. Most clients need two or three sessions for a finished result. Some larger areas need more.
SETTLES SOFTLY
Healed colour fades gently over years, not abruptly. Touch-ups are simple when they're eventually needed, typically every three to five years.
THE PROCESS
FROM FIRST MESSAGE TO FINAL SESSION
-
i.
CONSULTATION OR PHOTO ASSESSMENT
We start by looking at the scar, in person or by submitted photos. We look at age, colour, texture, and skin type. If it's a fit, we plan sessions. If it isn't, we explain why and what would change that.
-
ii.
CUSTOM PIGMENT FORMULATION
Your pigment is mixed for your specific skin tone and undertone, not pulled from a stock palette. Test patches go on the skin before any tattooing begins.
-
iii.
FIRST SESSION
A foundational layer is applied. We work conservatively. It's easier to add pigment than to lift it back out, so the first pass intentionally undershoots.
-
iv.
HEALING WINDOW
Six to eight weeks between sessions. The pigment settles, the body responds, and we see the true healed colour before adjusting.
-
v.
REFINEMENT SESSIONS
Subsequent sessions adjust tone, depth, and coverage based on how your skin actually healed, not on a generic protocol.
WHAT REALISTIC IMPROVEMENT CAN LOOK LIKE
SCAR CAMOUFLAGE BEFORE AND AFTER RESULTS
Every after image below is photographed at least 6 weeks post-final-session, when the pigment has fully settled. Day-of photos look misleading because the skin is inflamed and the colour has not healed yet. These are the realistic results.

YOUR INVESTMENT
PRICING THAT FOLLOWS THE WORK
Scar camouflage isn't priced like a standard tattoo. The cost depends on the size of the area, the number of sessions your skin actually needs, and the complexity of the colour match. The numbers below reflect typical ranges per session.
EVERY SESSION INCLUDES
- In-depth consultation and skin assessment
- Custom pigment formulation for your skin tone
- Aftercare ointment and written instructions
- The treatment session itself
SMALL / SINGLE SCAR
e.g. one short surgical scar, small accident scar
From $150
MEDIUM AREA
C-section, breast reduction, multiple smaller scars
$400 - $700
LARGER AREA
tummy tuck, multiple stretch marks, larger surgical work
$700 - $1,000
COMPLEX / MULTI-AREA
burn scarring, mommy makeover, layered cases
$1,000 - $1,300
Follow-up sessions are typically lower in cost. Your final quote is given after we've seen the area in person or in clear photos.
HONEST BOUNDARIES
WHEN THE ANSWER IS "NOT YET"
A careful no is part of careful work. These are the most common reasons we'll recommend waiting, declining, or pointing you toward another option.
WAIT, FOR NOW
- Your scar is less than a year old or still actively healing
- The scar is still red, pink, or purple, not yet stable
- You've had laser, peels, or cosmetic tattooing in the area within the last 6 to 8 weeks
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding
- The area is still emotionally raw, there's no rush
LIKELY NOT A FIT
- You have a known tendency for keloid, raised, fibrous scarring
- The scar is darker than your surrounding skin, camouflage works on lighter scars
- You're hoping the tattoo will erase the scar entirely
- You're not in a position to commit to multiple sessions over several months
- Active skin conditions in the area that need medical clearance first
COMMON QUESTIONS
-
HOW LONG DOES SCAR CAMOUFLAGE LAST?
Most clients see results that hold for three to five years before any touch-up is wanted. Some hold longer. Sun exposure is the main fader, so SPF on the area extends the result meaningfully.
-
DOES IT HURT?
Scar tissue has fewer nerve endings than regular skin, so most clients describe it as mild — a light scratching or tingling sensation. Larger areas can feel more sensitive toward the end of a session. We check in throughout.
-
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Most cases need two to three sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart. Larger or complex cases can need more. We never promise a session count without seeing the scar.
-
DOES IT HURT?
Most clients find it manageable, especially with numbing support used during the appointment. Sensitivity can vary, but the treatment is generally more tolerable than many people expect.
-
WILL MY SCAR DISAPPEAR?
No, and any provider promising erasure is overselling. Camouflage softens contrast. The texture of the scar stays. The visual prominence is reduced, often significantly. That's the honest scope.
-
CAN I SEND PHOTOS BEFORE BOOKING A CONSULTATION?
Yes — for many clients this is the better starting point, especially if the case is layered, you're traveling from further out, or you'd rather know whether you're a candidate before committing to a consultation.
-
ARE YOU TRAINED ON DARKER SKIN TONES?
Yes. Pigment matching for Fitzpatrick types I through VI is part of standard training here. Test patches are always done on your skin before tattooing begins.
