FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS PERMANENT EYELINER?
Think of permanent eyeliner (or eyeliner tattoo) as your replacement for daily application. This treatment is a client favourite because it takes away the stress and frustration of drawing on your liner ever morning. Your PMU artist works by placing soft, long-lasting pigment along your lash line to make your eyes look more defined and your lashes appear fuller and darker.
Like all of our services we can keep it minimal with a lash line enhancement (an ultra fine line tucked in between the lashes) or maybe you like a bolder look with a soft wing and some shading. Regardless of your preferences, this treatment is tailored to your eye shape, skin type, and how you like to wear your makeup.
One of the many reasons our clients love this service? It saves time, frustration, and delivers perfect precision every morning. No more worrying about smudged liner, uneven wings, or for our clients who wear glasses, the stress of guessing your way around eye makeup.
It has quickly become a favourite for clients with busy lifestyles, sensitive eyes, or those who just can’t be bothered.

Please send us a clear, makeup-free photo in good lighting before booking to help us give you an accurate estimate and confirmation of your candidacy for the service.
We practice strict sanitation practices to ensure your safety and ours. Every appointment includes single-use, sterile tools, high-quality pigments, numbing, and aftercare for you to take home.
We’ll review your appointment prep instructions and deposit details when you book, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before we start.
IS PERMANENT EYELINER SAFE?
For many people, as long as it’s done by a trained, certified artist, you’re a good candidate for the treatment. At SKN Deep, safety and sanitation is a part of every step. From your first consultation to the final session, we pride ourselves in offering a clean and enjoyable experience from start to finish!
Here’s how we keep it safe and comfortable for you:
- Your artist is certified in cosmetic tattooing and is specialized in the art of natural results that last.
- All needles, pigment cups, and protective covers are opened fresh for you and thrown away immediately following your session.
- We use the highest quality pigments designed to heal softly and fade evenly over time.
- We never tattoo the waterline or inner rim. Your eyes stay closed and protected the entire time.
- Numbing is applied before we start, and we work in light passes to ensure you are as as comfortable as possible.
- Your artist will check in with you throughout your session, and you take breaks whenever you need to.
After your appointment, it’s normal to notice:
- A little redness or swelling for a day and/or two
- Slight tightness or itchiness while healing
- Colour that looks bold at first, then softens over the next few weeks
You may need to wait or check with your doctor first if you have:
- An active eye infection or irritation
- Eye surgery or LASIK within the past 6 months
- Certain medications like Accutane in the last year or blood thinners without medical guidance
- Lash growth serums in use (pause for 2–4 weeks before your appointment)
We’ll talk everything through before we start so you feel confident and comfortable. And if there’s ever a reason to wait, we’ll give you a clear plan for when it’s safe to move forward.
WHAT PERMANENT EYELINER STYLES DO YOU OFFER?
We create everything from soft, barely-there definition to bold, statement wings. The best style for you comes down to your eye shape, skin, and how you like your everyday makeup to look. If you’re unsure of what style looks best on you, your artist can help by pre drawing a few options before you commit.
Your style options:
- Lash Line Enhancement – A thin line tucked right in between your lashes for a fuller-lash look without visible “makeup.” Perfect for contact lens wearers, hooded lids, or anyone who likes a natural finish.
- Classic Eyeliner – A soft, defined line above the lashes. Ideal if you wear liner most days and want a clean, polished edge. (no wing)
- Soft Wing – Our most requested style. A subtle flick that gently lifts the outer corner without going too dramatic. Great for a soft lift, especially on lids with a little hooding.
- Designer / Bold Wing – A thicker line with a longer wing for a more dramatic look. Best on lids with enough space and stable skin (we always test the angle to prevent any “printing” when you blink).
What we keep in mind for your design:
- Eye shape & lid movement – Hooded or mature lids often suit Lash Line or Soft Wing best, while bold, sharp wings typically need more smooth and taught lid space.
- Skin type – Oily skin may soften edges faster, so we might keep lines tighter and plan for potentially more frequent touch-ups.
- Existing pigment – Old eyeliner tattoos can limit shape or require lightening before adding new pigment.
- Lifestyle – If you wear makeup daily, you might love Classic or Soft Wing; if you want minimal, Lash Line is usually the go to.
Sessions & upkeep:
- Most clients need a second visit at 6–10 weeks to even out healing and perfect the shape. This session is included for new clients.
- Colour boosts are recommended 12–24 months, with softer styles fading sooner than bold ones.
Before we start, your artist will map out the shape with pencil onto your lash line, show you how it looks, and make any adjustments you need before we move on to the next step.
HOW LONG DOES PERMANENT EYELINER LAST?
Permanent eyeliner holds its pigment for years, but it’s not forever. The pigments we work with are meant to slowly soften and fade away, over time. Most styles last between 2 to 3 years before you’ll want a refresh.
How long yours lasts comes down to a few things:
- Your skin – Oily skin can cause pigment to fade or blur sooner, while drier or combination skin tends to hold onto colour longer.
- Your style choice – Soft lash line work and lighter pigment shades fade faster than bolder, darker styles.
- Your lifestyle – Lots of sun, chemical peels, retinoids, or regular steam/sauna sessions can break down pigment over time.
- What’s already there – If we’re working over an old eyeliner tattoo, the way it faded before can affect how the new pigment retains.
As a guide:
- Lash Line Enhancement – Refresh every 1–2 years.
- Classic or Soft Wing – Lasts around 1–2 years.
- Designer/Bold Wing – Can hold 2–3 years, though we might touch up the edges sooner if your lids are more mobile or oily.
We see permanent makeup as a beauty investment you maintain over time. An annual touch up keeps it looking fresh. If you’re unsure of whether you need a colour refresh, we can help you decide with a quick visit or even a photo check-in.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY PERMANENT EYELINER APPOINTMENT?
A little preparation helps your eyeliner heal smoothly, hold its colour, and last as long as possible. We’ll go over all the details when you book, but here’s a simple guide to follow.
1–2 weeks before your appointment:
- Lashes: Remove lash extensions at least 48 hours before. Avoid lash lifts or tints for two weeks before and after your appointment.
- Skincare: Pause retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, and benzoyl peroxide around the eye area for 7-10 days before your visit.
- Recent treatments: Wait at least 6 months after LASIK or eye surgery. Leave 2 weeks between any injectables (like Botox or filler) near the eyes.
48–72 hours before your appointment:
- When safe for you, avoid blood-thinning supplements or medications such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, high-dose garlic, or niacin.
- Always check with your doctor before making any changes to prescribed medications.
The day before and day of your appointment:
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
- Limit caffeine the morning of to reduce swelling & sensitivity.
- Remove contact lenses before your appointment and plan to avoid wearing them for 24 hours after.
- Arrive with clean skin and no eye makeup.
- Eat a light meal and drink water so you’re comfortable during your session.
Extra tips:
- Bring reference photos of the style you like.
- Let us know if you’ve had previous eyeliner tattooing — clear photos in good lighting help us plan the best approach.
- Remember, you’ll need to avoid heavy sweating for 48 hours and swimming, saunas, or steam rooms for 7–10 days after.
We’ll confirm all preparation instructions during your consultation, map your eyeliner so you can see it before we start, and make sure you feel confident and ready for your appointment.
WHAT DOES THE PERMANENT EYELINER HEALING PROCESS LOOK LIKE?
Healing is a journey, and your eyeliner will go through a few changes before it settles into its final look. Right after your appointment, expect the colour to look about 40–50% darker than it will once healed. That’s completely normal. Over the next few weeks, it will soften into your finished result.
Here’s how it usually goes:
- Days 1–2: Your liner will look darker and more defined. You might notice some swelling or redness, and the skin can feel slightly tight. Keep the area dry and avoid eye makeup and exercise.
- Days 3–5: Light flaking starts, and the colour may look uneven. Don’t pick at it — just let it fall off by itself.
- Days 6–10: The “milky” stage. The colour can seem lighter or patchy, but it’s only temporary while the pigment is still settling under the skin.
- Weeks 2–4: Things start evening out. The colour softens, the line smooths out, and you can go back to wearing mascara or eyeliner. Please make sure your products and brushes are clean.
- Weeks 6–10: Time for your perfecting session. This is where we fine-tune depth, shape, and crispness so your eyeliner looks exactly how you want it.
A few tips to help your results last:
- Take contacts out before your appointment and give them a break for 24 hours after.
- Skip heavy workouts for the first 48 hours, and hold off on swimming, saunas, or steam rooms for about a week.
- Keep lash extensions off until fully healed, and avoid lash lifts or tints for 3 weeks.
- No mascara or eyeliner on the treated area until all flaking is done.
If anything feels off or you’re unsure about what’s happening, don’t hesitate to send us a quick message or photo. We’ll let you know if it’s all part of the normal process and guide you on what to do next.
IS PERMANENT EYELINER SAFE FOR ALL SKIN TONES AND TYPES?
For many people, yes, permanent eyeliner can be done safely and look beautiful on a wide variety of skin tones and types. The key is matching the technique, pigment colour, and aftercare to how your skin naturally heals and holds colour.
Your skin tone and undertone are the first things we consider. We select pigments that work with your natural colouring so they heal true to tone. For deeper skin tones, we adjust the formula to prevent the colour from healing too cool or ashy.
Skin type also plays a role. Dry, normal, combination, and oily lids can all be treated. If your lids are on the oily side, pigment may soften or blur a bit faster, and we’ll plan your refresh timeline accordingly.
We also look closely at the skin around your eyes. Sensitivity, dryness, or changes in texture can influence how crisp your eyeliner heals. If you’ve had eyeliner tattooed before, old pigment may affect how the new colour takes. In some cases, we recommend lightening it first for the best results.
Your overall health is part of the conversation too. Certain conditions, medications, or a history of keloid scarring may mean we’ll need consent from your doctor before booking. We avoid treatment if there’s an active eye infection, uncontrolled skin issues near the eyes, recent eye surgery, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
CAN YOU WORK OVER OLD OR FADED EYELINER TATTOOS?
Often yes, we can work over old eyeliner tattoos, but it depends on how your existing pigment has healed. Before we start, we’ll take a close look at the colour, how much pigment is left, where it sits, and the condition of your skin to make sure your new design will look fresh and last.
If the old colour has faded evenly to a soft tone, we can usually work with it. But if it’s still dark, patchy, or has shifted to blue, green, or red, we may need to correct the colour or lighten it first before adding the new style.
The same goes for shape. If your old liner is too thick, too high, or uneven, we can’t just “cover it” to make it thinner or more natural. In those cases, lightening or removal gives us a clean canvas to work with.
We also consider how many times the area has been tattooed before. Skin that’s been worked on multiple times can be more delicate, so we may need to take a slower step by step approach. And if you have a specific style in mind (like a wing), we’ll make sure your current liner allows for that before committing to the service.
If lightening or correction is the best first step, we’ll explain the process, how many sessions it might take, and the time needed between them. We may ask you to send a clear, makeup-free photo in good lighting before booking, so we can give you an honest assessment.
CAN I WEAR MAKEUP AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?
Not yet. Your new eyeliner needs some breathing room before you start wearing eye makeup again. Giving it time to heal keeps the colour crisp, helps it last, and lowers the chance of irritation or infection.
For eye makeup, we recommend waiting 7–10 days. Once the flaking has stopped and the skin feels smooth again, you can ease back into your routine. Using makeup too soon can affect your healing and retention. Clean your eye makeup brushes and products and use a gentle makeup remover with minimal scrubbing. Face makeup is safe if kept away from the lash line until you’re fully healed.
If lash lifts, tints, or extensions are part of your routine, wait two weeks before booking your services.
